A Year in SUMMIT
As we entered the school year in August 2021, it was with high hopes that students would be able to return to the full SUMMIT experience that makes Agnes Scott unique. While adjustments had to be made and flexibility remains the name of the game, students at Agnes Scott this year took full advantage of the SUMMIT experience.

Inhabiting Curiosity
Like many people, I am a big fan of the idea of space. It started, for me, with learning all the names of the planets through a Blue’s Clues song (and yes, Pluto was still a planet at that point) and then graduated into science fiction novels and films. I follow NASA and other research teams on social media and keep up with new research findings, even when I don’t entirely understand them.

The Real Questions
I recently participated on a panel offering advice to prospective students on their college search process. During this panel, we spoke about the value of finding your fit–the idea that identifying the colleges that you can see yourself thriving in will contribute to success during and after college. After a few of us made this point, a student unmuted and asked, “But how can you tell if a college is a good fit for you?”

Academic Major Spotlight on: Dance
Do you know what a dance major actually does when in college? While performance and dance ability are definitely skills that students learn, the Agnes Scott dance major is very academically well-rounded with a focus on the historical context of dance. “Students learn Labanotation (the language of dance) in addition to technique, drawing parallels between the technical material they experience today with the codified techniques of the past,” says Professor Bridget Roosa, Professor of Dance and Chair of Theatre and Dance.

Finishing Strong
Let’s address the elephant in the room for high school seniors: as you begin your final semester of high school, it’s not necessarily the most relaxing time in your life. In addition to, well, finding out admission decisions, figuring out financial aid, and making your final college choice, you’re also finishing out your high school experience. Oh, and also, doing it in a resurgence of COVID-19 variants.

2021 Year-End Wrap Up
2021. It’s been...a year. A year with ups and downs, a year that continued to give us unprecedented challenges. Together, Agnes Scott students, faculty and staff have faced down the challenges of global pandemics as vaccines began to roll out, racial injustice and inequity and everything else that the year has brought us.

Academic Major Spotlight on: Chemistry
Finding your place as an Agnes Scott chemist Agnes Scott’s chemistry major is set apart from chemistry majors at other institutions. As Professor Sarah Winget says, “Chemistry is often male-dominated at other institutions, so it is great that women get to be the voices of chemistry at Agnes Scott.” Chemistry sticks out in other ways as well, however, including in the success that Agnes Scott chemistry graduates find. Students in the chemistry major are prepared for fields related to chemistry, with graduates working as lab technicians, physician researchers, process engineers, researchers and forensic scientists. However, majors have also found themselves in fields such as patent law, pharmaceutical research and data…

You Pushed Submit…Now What?
Demystifying the Agnes Scott application process You’ve done it! You put in all your activities, did a final proofread of your essay, gave your most passionate and perfect answer for “Why Agnes Scott?” and you are ready to hit that submit button to send off your college application. Your hand hovers over the submit button. You look at it. It looks at you (in an anthropomorphized fashion). And you wonder: what happens after I push this button? It’s a big question: college applications do seem more than a bit mysterious. You submit all that work, you wait for an unspecified amount of time, and eventually you get a letter back…

Academic Major Spotlight on: Psychology
A look at what makes one of Agnes Scott’s most popular academic majors special In recent memory, Agnes Scott’s psychology major has always landed on the list of top five majors for Scotties. Maybe that’s because psychology is such a quintessential liberal arts major, preparing students for multiple fields. Yes, Agnes Scott psychology graduates have gone on to be clinical psychologists, therapists and psychiatrists. But they’ve also become lawyers, school superintendents, victims advocates, marketing and development coordinators, researchers, business analysts and professors. Interested in the psychology major, but unsure if it fits you exactly? Here’s a taste of what the major has to offer you, straight from psychology major Taliesyn…
